I had a severe case of sciatica which persisted for weeks. It was painful to walk and I couldn’t get a good nights sleep because of the discomfort. Urgent care prescribed physical therapy so I chose Spear on West 16 st as they were very close to home. My therapist was Shash. Shash was genuinely dedicated to help me get better. She worked with me 2 sessions a week stretching and moving to release pressure on my sciatic nerve. I was also given some exercises to do at home. After 4 or 5 weeks my pain had improved considerably and in 9 or 10 weeks I was back to my normal good feeling self and was finished with my sessions at Spear. I really looked forward to going there as Shash was always happy to see me and she assigned several young practitioners to work with me also. I am pleased to say that I have resumed all normal activities and am so grateful that I made the right choice in going to Spear on 16 street. BTW , I am 77 years old (in case age matters)

I've spent much of my life in and out of PT to deal with a combination of congenital issues, and recovery from orthopedic surgeries. Over the years I've probably worked with over a dozen different physical therapists including a few at Spear in Chelsea.

Over the past month or so I've been working with Melanie. She has quickly become my favorite physical therapists I've ever worked with.

Melanie is incredibly knowledgeable. She has picked out a set of exercises that have given me consistent improvement from not being able to handle stairs to being able to slowly start running again! She's also taken the time to explain why she chose any particular exercise and how the different exercises are working together. In addition to the knee pain I'm working on now I have congenital issues from being born with club feet. She's been great at adjusting the exercises to accommodate the associated issues with my heel cords.

In addition to incredible expertise Melanie brings to the job she's incredibly attentive. Of course, she pays careful attention to my body to make sure I'm doing the exercises correctly, but she also brings that mindfulness more completely to the practice. She has been very focused on what my goals are, asking lots of questions about what my injury history is, and what my concrete goals around running look like. She also does a great job of touching base at the beginning of every session to understand how things are progressing, and what's been working and what's been more challenging in the past week. She takes the time to understand me as a full person. She also does an incredible job of balancing encouraging me to push myself without having me over do it.

Some other reviews bring up the issues that come from one therapist juggling more than one patient at a time. Sometimes the schedule works out such that Melanie has to split her attention between me and another patient. While this isn't my favorite model for patient care, I've been incredibly impressed that even at these times Melanie still makes me feel attended to. She makes sure I know what exercises I'm doing and is careful to watch my form before moving on to work with her other patient.

In summary it's been a delight to work with Melanie and I'd recommend her to anyone and everyone. Spear is incredibly lucky to have her.

I have been using Spear PT for over 4 months. Himani is my therapist, and she is an excellent, intelligent, therapist who completely understands my situation with my achilles tendonitis and knee issues. She is very clear with her explanations and mindfully chooses exercises each week. Through her expertise and kindness, my recovery has gone really well. I highly recommend Himani.

I injured my back during a gym session in July and was diagnosed with L3-4, L4-5 and L5-S1 lumbar disc bulges. After my visits to the doc and MRI, I landed up at Spear physical therapy at their Midtown east 56th street location. My physical therapist was Esha Tiwari who worked diligently with me over the past 2.5 months to help me get better. Esha is a truly gifted professional, kind, friendly, very patient and super easy to work with. She was consistently thorough and very detailed in guiding me get the most out of my weekly therapy sessions, be it the physical exercises that I had to perform or the back treatment at the end of each session or the continuous guidance in between. Right from the get-go I knew I was in good hands.

Over the course of my treatment, along with Esha, I also got to work with other professionals at Spear who provided support during my therapy sessions, and I can honestly say that all of them were super friendly and very helpful.

I learnt a ton from Esha in terms of what exercises to do on a daily basis to get better, and more importantly how to gradually make progress in various strength training and sport activities in the gym and on the field.

Midway through our weekly sessions, she had to move to the Spear center located in Chelsea on 16th street, and I followed without hesitation regardless of the distance from my residence. Yesterday, 14th Nov, was my last session at Spear Chelsea center and I am grateful to Esha and Spear for making me feel whole and normal again. I have resumed running long distances once again and have also started to gradually increase my weights at the gym, albeit with caution, proper form and common sense.

I thank Esha Tiwari and Spear for making my recovery through pain and discomfort manageable and easier than I expected.

My oh my am I writing this review later than I planned, Spear Chelsea team please forgive me, y’all are the absolute best!

Let’s just say, I was a really complicated case, fresh out of a multi part shoulder surgery that was meant to solve my chronic shoulder and neck pain; I was a mess physically and definitely didn’t have the highest of spirits due to the long period of time I had dealt with pain.

I had the extreme pleasure of working with Kendrick(OT) and Camryn(PT) during my recovery and into my work to reduce the chronic pain that was due to another underlying cause. When I tell you that this place is DIFFERENT to other PT/OT place I have been, I’m not exagerrating, I got to know a lot of the other therapists because this team works as a unit, they support each other and help each other out and support their patients in the same manner too. You feel this incredible energy from everyone.

One thing I think is really helpful to is Spear Chelsea’s dedication to supporting even when issues with insurance come up (max 20 annual PT sessions is unrealistic ?) I really appreciate Amanda always being amazing and working with patients to find ways to continue or support their recovery. The healthcare system is so broken, but this team is always trying to do what they can to help, that really matters.

I spent nearly a year with Camryn and Kendrick, they were there for me through so many ups and downs and supported me no matter what. Recovery can be a really isolating time for some and I don’t think I could’ve gotten through it without them and the team, I am truly grateful for you guys.

Now that I’ve gotten all my feelings out,

I must say they had a great knowledge and creative ways to work through any issues, really listened(I mean REALLY LISTENED) to what you have to say and made adjustments where it was needed. I always felt safe and in the best hands and care. The facility is also really cool, they have a unique sub basement floor with high ceiling and a large window for natural light, you check in upstairs and take the stairs or elevator down to the treatment floor, lockers, and changing rooms.

Kendrick, Camryn, and the amazing team at Spear Chelsea,

I can’t ever thank you enough for everything and helping me get to a point where I can manage and live again. You guys have magic in you <3

EDITED POST 2025:
I’m currently in PT again for debilitating sciatica. I tried making an appointment with Spear, but they were booked for a while, so I turned to Google for help. I found a place very close to me called Sport Physiotherapy. Gave it a chance because they were close, took my insurance, and had availability. Not the best reasons to choose, but I needed help fast. DAMN did I luck out.

My guy Joe is truly amazing, and I realize now what good PT is, and what it’s not. While Spear always had a pleasant , helpful environment, and everyone is well intentioned, it’s a mill that processes too many patients and gives fairly rudimentary therapy. I was there for maybe 4-6 months after a total knee replacement and I never truly recovered. Over six years later I still have a leg functioning at half strength.

My therapists at Spear were always doing their best, but giving someone a Theraband to go walk for ten minutes while you fill out paperwork, or start working on another patient until I’m finished walking, isn’t really great PT. They always had to switch back between tasks and patients and it’s just too much, which probably explains the fairly high employee turnover rate I witnessed. All the therapists are in their 20s, and as good as they may be, there’s really only so much information and experience a 20-year-old has. Having since experienced what I consider PT that is crazy good, and one-on-one personalized, I’d have to recommend you avoid large chain companies that don’t give you the attention you really need to get well. If you have major surgery, there’s really a limited window to totally recover and getting basic PT just isn’t enough. That’s really all Spear is, is basic PT. And that may be enough given your situation. It wasn’t for me.

When it’s your time to get help to recover, do your homework first. I got lucky with Google, but I wouldn’t recommend it as a general practice. Call around and find a therapist who works with you and ONLY you, one on one. Joe spends the entire time working with me. Period. He watches me, and he notices things that are bothering me without me even having to tell him. He sees it. He knows it from years of experience. He’s a multi-disciplined expert who knows anatomy like the back of his hand.

When you need help, ask your doctor. Ask friends. Call around. And if you feel like you’re only getting partial attention or therapy that doesn’t really challenge you—and you NEED to be challenged after something like a total knee replacement—find another therapist. Give yourself permission to look for something better.

The therapy is hard. If hurts. But if you put in the work and your expert guides you, you won’t regret it. Frankly, in hindsight, I consider my time at Spear largely a waste and it’s a painful lesson learned. It’s very tough to fully recover years after surgery, but with Joe’s help, I’m determined to do it.

Find your Joe.

Great staff. Everyone is very friendly and it’s clear they care about the people they’re treating. Jason and George have been fantastic helping me with my knee replacement and I’m very grateful. They have strong support from their techs, and I’m genuinely impressed at how well everyone works as a team. I would definitely recommend Spear Chelsea.
